Carla Gover

Carla Gover was born in Whitesburg, Kentucky, in the central Appalachian Mountains. In the music she writes and performs, she plays tribute to the themes of home, family and independence, which are central to the mountain culture.

From the time she was a young girl, Carla absorbed traditional mountain ways from her grandmother Ollie Gilbert Hudson. She learned how to use herbs and native plants for medical purposes, a knowledge she now passes on to others.

As a student at the University Of Kentucky, Carla majored in Appalacian studies. As she met and played with other musicians, she began to write songs that were rooted in the musical traditions of the mountains where she had grown up.

Through her music, Carla carries on the region's rich musical heritage. "I was taught that whatever you do with your life, you should help other people, bringing joy to them, and to yourself. There is nothing I love doing more than playing music."

Fallopian Tubes

From the sweet tropical nights and long hot days of Florida's West Coast comes an improbable six woman band with a signature sound. Combining literate lyrics with mischievous humor, the alternative rock group sings about safe sex, breast cancer, revenge, suburban shopping and tourists.

Formed in 1980, these are the original riot girls-amused rather than angry, mixing subversive lyrics with whimsical instrumentation and rich harmonies to produce a strange brew of original tunes in every conceivable style. Like the jukebox in your favorite bar, The Fallopian Tubes display a stylistic range that takes them from blues-imbued rock'n'roll to calypso, with unexpected forays into swing and country.

Band founder and bass player Toffer Ross pens many of the original tunes and brings to the eclectic musical blend her virtuoso tuba, for which the band is named. Lead guitarist and occasional vocalist Slim Ryan is one of the reasons the band can pull off this unorthodox mix, deftly spinning out reverb-laden rock and fabulously bent blues chords.

Among the other reasons are the band's two vocalists, the gospel-influenced powerhouse singer Whitney Bryant and the superbly expressive Lori Keegan. Lisa Hurst is the newest Tube, a roots rock drummer with steady cadence and an understated style, while long time band member Cher Gulachok brings imaginative percussion flourishes.

Add mandolin, violin, ukulele, steel drums, conga and harmonica, and you have a notion of the maverick musical adventure that awaits you.

Carol Plunk

Carol Jean Plunk was born on February 13, 1972 in Beech Bluff, TN. Music was in her blood. Carol's dad was a bluegrass musician along with her paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, So Car ol's family gatherings consisted of listening to her relatives play the harmonica, banjo and mandolin. Carol herself started playing the guitar at the age of five. She also plays other instruments fluently such as: Drums, Bass guitar, Mandolin and keyboar ds. She hasn't stopped since.

In May, 1987 at the young age of fifteen, Carol formed her first band, consisting of two other females and one male. The name of her first band was REVELATION. REVELATION performed in night clubs and the like regionally up until 1994. At that time, two of the members left the band to pursue other occupations. Carol and the one existing member formed an acoustic duo called THE BELLE CURVES.

THE BELLE CURVES went on to achieve great accomplishments. Their 1995 CD release titled "The Belie Curves" sold over two thousand copies in just a years time. THE BELLE CURVES gave over 500 performances during their time together and were spotlighted i n several national magazines. Some of their larger performances include the 1996 Las Vegas, NV Pride Event in which they performed in front of 6,500* people. They also performed at the 1996 New Orleans, LA Pride Event and were invited to the 1996 San Fran cisco, CA Pride Event. The THE BELLE CURVES duo decided to go their separate ways in November 1996.

Carol has since released a self-titled CD on her own and has been performing vigorously around the United States. Her biggest accomplishment thus far was the invitation to perform at the 1996 Summer Olympics that was held in Atlanta, Georgia. She perfo rmed on the Samsung Electronics stage in front of a countless crowd.

Carol's future plan includesperforming in as many places in front of as many people as possible. She takes much pride in her work and believes that no matter where she's performing or whether there's five or five thousand people, she gives 110%. Carol says that if she only touches one person in each crowd with a song or idea that she has written, her goal in life has been accomplished.

Mellisa Lou

The Musicians Exchange

Continuing my series of "The Female Solo Artist In Manhattan," this month's worthy subject is Melissa Lou. A California transplant who's spent a number of years in Germany playing and singing for a couple of pop/rock bands. Her voice is her most arrest ing feature, but her good looks are not far behind. Her guitar playing is simple but sharp. There were times when she got a bit intense during her recent set at the Sidewalk Cafe-songs about child abuse and that sort of thing---but we need more topical wr iters in these days of layered irony. The chording of her songs was often very basic, but never the melody line of the vocal parts. She always had some trick up her sleeve to keep the audience's attention, which she did even more effortlessly than she pro bably realized.

Megan McLaughlin

What they're saying about Megan's first CD, Noisy World Reprinted from a review written for Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange by Shawn Linderman (shawn @ xyvision . com)

Megan McLaughlin's debut CD Noisy World immediately evoked comparisons to Barbara Kessler and Dee Carstensen in my mind--hers is a lovely voice, sweet and clear with an underlying rich soulfulness. For a debut work, the songwriting is quite mature , and she employs a wide range of musical influences with deft precision. After just a few listenings, I find myself humming her tunes when I'm walking around at work, so th e hooks are there too.

Megan begins with "Paris," a lilting tune of fond reminiscence. Between college in New York and eventually settling in California, Megan spent a year busking in the subway below the Arche de Triomphe in Paris, learning and perfecting her performan ce skills. Native Parisian accordioniste Odile Lavault certainly gives the tune a subtle French flavor, while Eric Schoen's percussions create the mood of pensive recall.

"Still on the Run" addresses the uncertainties of goals in life and their potential rewards. In particular, whether to persue motherhood and mortgages or something else as yet unencountered. The syncopated percussions on this tune, along with Mega n's voice, strongly suggest Kessler and her percussionist/husband Phil Anton iades. Mark Lemaire, who also produced the CD, adds excellent, slightly funky, bass.

In "Holdin' On," Megan really nails that peculiar turning point in a relationship where things seem to stagnate and you either have to tough it out or let it go altogether. "Things seem so estranged somehow, and the man I fell in love with seems a different one than I see here now..."

A couple of tunes touch on the homeless, but not with pity or preaching. "Picture of Grace" is about beauty within, and "Cold Night" is a brutally honest exploration of personal attitudes towards those less fortunate. think the opening metaphor of "Send Down a Light" is brilliant: "So this is how it feels, shot down by friendly fire, alone on my side of the bed..." Any doubts about what this tune laments?

The title track details Megan's answer to stress: swimming. (The water theme is prevalent on several tracks, and three of four photos in the liner notes feature Megan in or near water.) Here the Carstensen-like soulfulness sluices through the song like Megan through the water.

The closing, and my favorite, tune is "New Year's Day," with just Megan on guitar and vocals. Very clean fingerpicking alternates with strummed "beats" as she relates how newness is an attitudeand any day can become the start of a new year.

While touching deeply and painfully on love and loss, the overall tone of Noisy World is quite positive. McLaughlin's perceptions are very sharp, sometimes brilliant, and her voice and guitar are simply excellent. She and her supporting cast, incl uding Keith Greeninger, Roger Feuer, Jamie Byrd, Lars Jensen and Lee Elfenbein, have crafted a lovely collection of snapshots of our lives. You are in its pages too. Vicky Pratt Keating

Billboard (1/29/94)

Blue Apples
DALLAS: Although Vicky Pratt Keating hails from the Washington, D.C., area, her "acoustic pop" stylings have so endeared her to the locals here that she's now considered an "honorary Texan." Keating, who has been likened to the Suzanne Vega/Nanci G riffith genre of singers, really has a style all her own, and therefore prefers the "acoustic pop" tag rather than folk designation. While many of the songs take on a melancholy feel, she intertwines elements of hope into her words and guitar melodies. He r performance at Borders Books and Music here reinforeed both that style and her songwriting abilities. D.C. is also noticing her talents: Keating recently won two "Wammies," Washington, D.C.'s music awards, in the best female vocalist/contemporary folk and the best recording/contemporary folk categories, for her release "Blue Apples." Says David Dennard, head of Dragon Street Records, "I discovered her at a demo listening panel at last year's South By Southwest, and her CD blew everything else we heard away." Dennard currently is shopping the recording to major labels. The release is composed entirely of her own music-with accompaniments of bagpipes, bazouki, and mandolin--and her thoughts. Keating's poetic turns also are evident in "Silvie," a tune she says she penned while "reading a little too much Sylvia Plath." Keating, who began her musical career 10 Years ago in a rock band in D.C., now lives near Charlottesville, Va., and performs frequently in New England, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Texas.

Performing Songwriter (1/93)

Blue Apples
Two thumbs up! Keating travels down the same shimmery, acoustic path as pop/folk artists like Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin, while exerting her own strong musical identity.

Lots to praise here, but I was especially impressed with Keating's mysterious, image-rich lyrics. Consider this excerpt from "Rough Draft:" Cloustrophobic rooms are my bone/love walls, heart boxes, soul cages/with one ear poised to the sky/I listen for the other side/I know it 's there somewhere.

Other highlights include the playful "Boy With a Kite," the moody "Shoot for the Moon," and a gorgeous ballad, "NY 10/11/91," which gave me goosebumps.

Keating's airy voice is supported by her fine guitar playing and a topnotch band, including D.C. studio MVP Pete Kennedy. Big league-sounding production by Bob Read and Keating.

Heartsong Review (Spring-95)

Blue Apples
Are you in for a surprise! Tucked away in the hills of Virginia is a woman with talent that can blow your socks off. Those of you lucky enough to catch her on one of her many stops on her long tours of the right side of the map know what I'm talking abou t. Those of us on the left are a lot less lucky and familiar with Keating who shines on this debut album.

Apples is a bold and refreshing blend of Vicky's sweet powder keg of a voice and her ability to write tight, powerful numbers full of suberb instrumentation giving support to her original, haunting poetry. Boy With a Kite is a whimsical, upbeat feast of cello, violin, electric and acoustic guitar, percussion, bass and keyboards. This one has a wonderfully quirky, orchestrated feel that had me thinking of XTC, only softer. "He's starting to unwind/A boy with a kite/He don't care if it's day or ni ght/Just wants to fly that Kite./this is his one man scene/Putting on a show just for me." Another favorite is the sensually dark, haunting Shoot For the Moon wherein we are treated to the smoky, lower register of this multi-faceted voice. Hypnotic and en trancing with soft keyboard and guitar, rolling drums, trembling cymbals and ethereal harmonies. "I'd like to be in love, never to refuse/Buddha in my belly or Vishnu in my shoes."

This unique artist defies category. A gift to the world of music. From provacative to downright fun, this one is sure to remain on PLAY in the stereo for a long time to come. That is, of course, until her next one arivves..Most highly recommende d.
--- Jennifer

Lee Adams

The cleverest lyrics in alternative music are found on Lee Adams' debut release, "Champions & Lunatics". Lee writes witty and smart little pop songs in a genre which she has made her own alternative lounge rock . Her debut album (released on Permanent Records, Long Beach, CA) contains a string of dark and brooding compositions at times disguised by offbeat and quirky arrangements. Her songs gather their energy from the genuine emotion in her voice, leading you o n a journey at once shocking and soothing. Like a well- made classic movie, you experience more from her songs each time you hear them.
---Lesley Chilcott

Censor This Magazine (2/96)

Champions And Lunatics
This is one of the strongest and most realized albums I have ever heard by an "unknown" artist. The songwriting is fresh and inventive, the playing is amazing and Lee Adams can sing. Her lyrics are smart and witty without being coy or pretentious. She see ms to have learned that trick from Elvis Costello. The band features some great players especially Mark Huhnke on keyboards. Lee Adams will surely be coasting along on the AAA airwaves any day now.
