Tresoro Sephardis (jfr-9804 -1998)
"TRESOROS SEPHARDIS" is a compilation CD of traditional, secular Sephardic songs in Judeo-Spanish. The 12 tracks come fiom my three previously-recorded albums of this repertoire. The brief liner-notes are written in standard Spanish to help forge the historic connection between the Hispanic and Jewish cultures. The purpose of this recording is twofold: to introduce this genre of music before the Judeo-Spanish-speaking Sephardim throughout the world have all passed on. Their 500 year-old tradition of orally transmitting language and song, from generation to generation is rapidly dwindling. Hopefully, hearing these songs will awaken the listener's curiosity enough to lead him to seek out these tradition-bearers in order to hear this ancient dialect of spanish first-hand and to explore the recordings of Sephardic singers like Flory Jagoda, Henriette Azen, Los Pasharos etc.
The second reason for creating this album has to do with the Spanish
Inquisition and the Crypto-Jews. Many Spanish Jews went into hiding during
the 14th and 15th centruies in Spain, pretending to be Christians while
continuing to practice Judiasm secretly. These Conversos (often and
unfortunately referred to as marranos) tried desperately to follow Jewish
customs, and to teach their children. Now, after more than 500 years,
their (mostly Catholic) descendants are dispersed world-wide. With the
current interest in geneology, many Hispanics are discovering that their
ancestors were anusim. (The Hebrew word anusim, meaning ‘forced ones’, is
more commonly used today than marranros, a Spanish word for ‘swine’.)
Often after my concerts, a Spanish-speaking person will come up and tell
me privately that he feels a mysterious connection with the Jewish people,
later discovering that his ancestors had actually been Spanish Jews or
anusim!

Sephardic Songs Of Love And Hope
Most of these songs were taught to me in Oral Tradition by Sephardies now living in the United States. Pronunciation differs among singers, and there seems to be no universally accepted system of spelling Ladino. Que= ke / y=i / fijo=hijo=ijo, etc.
