Jennifer Berezan

Borderlines

"Borderlines" was released in 1992 on Flying Fish Records. From the first cut Shadows on the Street right through the last cut Angel Boots, you are taken on a musical expedition showcasing the artistic magic and creativity of Jennifer Berezan. She skillfully uses all the musical elements at her disposal to craft powerful reflections of her insights, her passion and her deep spiritual awareness. Her song writing is masterful, her voice is magnificent, and the arrangements, masterpieces in themselves, tie everything together and make it work. The inclusion of great artist such as Nina Gerber , Chris Webster and Mike Marshall (also the producer) complete this beautiful composition.

Whether her theme is social and political comment, or spiritual celebration, she conveys her deep feelings and passion through her music into the listeners soul. This element is present in every cut and I think is the heart of her appeal as an artist and a human being. Borderlines, the title cut from the album is a haunting song about memories of her home, Alberta Canada, and the longing to go back, and the borderlines that separate. The US Canada borderline being a metaphor for the imaginary borderlines we create to limit our potential and freedom. No matter what borderlines you've created, you connect with the feelings of the song and feel the tinge of where she speaks (sings). Her song writing gets right down to your soul, she has something to say , and does it in such a way, you listen with full attention. She transfers her passion and her feelings through her music directly into you.

Several cuts on the CD examine the product and fallout of the so called American Dream and the underlying damage to our spirituality. They are like a wake up call attempting to shake us from our deep slumber. When You're Young is a powerful commentary on how we crush the spirit of the young and mold them into the empty, sad class of people that seem to define our culture. Shadows on the Street is a song about homelessness and the feelings of despair, guilt, and powerlessness, but from the reference point of the non homeless observer. She asks, Where are all the feelings in this town? The powerful feelings about lack of feelings is driven home masterfully by this gifted artist. State of the Union has a march like feel and sounds like a some sort of patriotic anthem, but its a passionate plea to take a look at what we are doing as a nation. It is a patriotic song, but the antithesis of bind patriotism.
Borderlines, a wonderful experience!
