After being out of the studio for 2 1/2 years, Laura Kemp has produced a highly-anticipated new
album, Corduroy. Boasting 12 songs composed by Kemp, this project finds Laura and her band edging into
the alternative folk-rock vein without losing her lyrical focus and musical roots. Band members Brian West (on
drums and percussion) and T.R. Kelley (on fretted and fretless basses), also sing background vocals,
providing lush three-part harmonies. In addition, a rich tapestry of texture is added by guest musicians Brian
Price on violin, Dale Bradley on cello, Tim Daueherty on harmonica, and Forrest Moyer on double bass. Like
her second album, Volcano (1994), Corduroy was engineered and mixed by Bill Barnett at Gung Ho Studio in
Eugene, OR, and is destined for airplay on folk and AAA shows across the country.
The album takes the listener on a wild ride through sonic landscapes populated by lost lovers, ghosts of children and irritating cats. Kicking off with the catchy Dimes Down a harmony-heavy look at love from a phone booth, it eases into the moving ballad, Ash and Soul, featuring cello and violin. The title track, Corduroy, an unconventional look at the death of a mother, is embellished by a dual bass solo, while harmonica adds a lighter touch to Andrew, the description of a seven year old nephew who brings comic relief to the family's visit. From T.R. KelIey's sinuous fretless bass lines in Done Deal, to Brian West’s multifaceted percussion and drum work in Glorified Name, the band and guest musicians never fail to tastefully compliment Laura's poignant lyrics and agile vocal delivery.
A dynamic performer, Kemp establishes an immediate rapport with the audience through her refined
confidence and uncompromising frankness. Her aggressive, yet intimate, guitar style is coupled with a
refreshing use of open tunings and multiple capos. Victory Review (Seattle, WA) says "Give Bob Dylan a
good voice and you've got the idea of the impact of Laura Kemp's message and music." This year will find
Laura and the band embarking on frequent tours up and down the 1-5 corridor. Don't miss them!
