Souvenir Souvenir released in 1994 is Suzanne McDermotts first CD and features ten original and very unique songs. Her subject matter is not for the easy listener type. Her song writing is soulful, poetic, spiritual, and demands the full attention and interaction of the listener. "The Tie That Binds" is a gentle reminder of the temporary and separate nature of our relationships. "Heartbroken" is about how vulnerable we all are at times and the pain we suffer when someone betrays our trust. "Long Distance", "Souvenir", and "And It Still Is Blue" are poetic insights into the nature of the universe and our spiritual relationship to it. Not many songs have been written about J. Robert Oppenheimer, but "The 3 Dreams of J. Robert Oppenheimer" can only be appreciated by listening to it.
Suzanne's voice is beautiful, subtle, steady, and after listening for a short period, you recognize the distinctive signature that is Suzanne McDermott. Other artist featured on this album are Ken Selcer doing some fine guitar work, Lynne Saner and Peg Loughran add backing vocals, and Julie Durrell on cello.
This first effort by Suzanne showcases her talent as a superb singer
songwriter, and the promise of a productive future.
Sentiments so strong that they're scary. These are songs that make you think.
Marvin Minsky ~ Japan Prize Laureate
Her voice is lush and graced with a grandness of tone. It easily embraces laughing, rippling trills as well as warmth and the more discordant vagaries of life.
Joel Welin ~ Sarasota Herald Tribune
Her lyrics are intelligent and challenging, her singing and melodies lovely.
Andrew Calhoun ~ Singer-songwriter
Beautiful work. I'm stunned by the unexpectedness in these songs; the guitar, the melody, the lyrics. It's very refreshing.
Brooks Williams ~ Singer-songwriter
An intimate and spare setting effectively frames a gorgeous voice on this commendable release. McDermott's lyrics are worth close inspection. A quietly powerful disc.
Bob McWilliams ~ KANU University of Kansas
Suzanne's remarkable voice takes center stage. It's a wondrous instrument in itself; clear and resonant in tone, coupled with an adventurous approach to phrasing.
Mark Warren ~ Focus Magazine Clearwater, FL
Boy, that Suzanne McDermott sure can write... That's a mind working there. Gotta get my little portable CD player fixed so I can take it into my lit analysis class and play them some real poetry.
John McLaughlin ~ WESS, East Stroudsburg University, PA.
Whoa! Check this out. Stunning songs of amazing complexity. Larry & Lynn Tunstall ~ KPFA Berkeley, CA
A dreamy album portraying the rich variety of the bittersweet natures of longing. The themes range from personal considerations of sensual yearning and past or faraway love, through the down but not out dreams of the American society, to songs of transcendental hope and encouragement.
Peter Berryman ~ Singer-songwriter
